​Sophomore standout Elly Peters takes home OUA All-Star honours in 2022, after playing a crucial role in the Gryphons’ attack during the 2022 season. Peters showcased incredible technical skills throughout the season and helped lead the attack from the midfield with her exceptional vision and distribution skills.

Coach Turley comments on Peters: “Elly generates our attack from the midfield position and has been critical in our team’s success. She has incredible hands which is evident in her exceptional 3D elimination and technical skills as well as her first touch on the ball. Elly plays a crucial role on our attacking penalty corner unit as the stick stopper but can also shoot. She is fantastic at finding the open person highlighting her distribution skills and exceptional vision. On top of that, Elly plays with poise and confidence.”

The Gryphons fell just short of reaching the OUA final this season, marking the end of an incredible streak of consecutive OUA final appearances, dating back to 2007. The 2022 OUA field hockey season will culminate this Saturday (Oct. 29 - 1pm) with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues hosting the York Lions. ​Former Cobra, Sidney Evans earned the nod as an OUA All-Star for 2021 and was one of 11 players across the country to be selected to the All-Canadian team.

A member of the 2019 Gryphon OUA championship team, Evans returned to Guelph this year looking to repeat that success. Drawing back on her previous success, the Waterloo product has been a great leader for the Gryphs while still displaying the wide range of her talents on the field.  With Evans being so good at so many different aspects of the game, it makes perfect sense to Turley that she was named an All-Star.

"Sidney has ignited our attack from both the forward and midfield positions," Turley said. "She has an unpredictable flair and has excellent ball handling skills, good vision on the field and connects well with other players. She has a great first touch and exceptional ability to eliminate defenders."

"Sid has an impressive combination of endurance and speed. With her incredible work ethic, she utilizes her speed on the attack but also tackles back very hard making her a force at a mere 5'0" to be incredibly effective on both sides of the ball. She piloted the Gryphons to a 5-1-2 record in league play, a 5-game win streak, the West Division title and a berth to Guelph's 14th straight OUA Championship."

GUELPH, ON – "As far as professional development goes, it doesn't get much better than this."

Those were the words used by Gryphons and Cobras Field Hockey Head Coach Michelle Turley when asked about her upcoming assignment as the Assistant Coach of the Canadian Junior Women's Field Hockey Team. Turley has been named to the staff that will be leading a group of approximately 20 young women to Santiago, Chile for two weeks of training and test matches against the Chilean Junior Team. From January 12-22, Team Canada will play a total of seven exhibition matches against Chile.

For Turley, this marks her third coaching stint at the national level after having also served as an assistant for the National Team in 2005 at the Junior Pan Am Games; followed by an assistant role for the Senior National Team in August of 2014 during the Canada-U.S. indoor series in Pennsylvania.

"It is an honour to able to represent your country and I'm excited to be working with such a talented group of coaches and athletes. This is a big year for the Canadian Junior Program and I'm thrilled to be a part of it."

That ' big year' that Coach Turley is referring to is the 2016 Junior Field Hockey World Cup which is set to take place in November in Santiago, Chile. In order to get there, the Canadian team must first get through their qualifying stage which will get underway in March in Trinidad and Tobago.

Michelle Turley's assignment to the Junior National Team comes on the heels of yet another impressive season at the helm of the Gryphons Field Hockey program. Turley, who just recently completed her 12 th season as head coach at the University of Guelph, was named OUA Coach of the Year for the second time in her career after having led the Gryphons to an 11-1 regular season record, good for top spot in the OUA standings. In the playoffs, Turley would help lead the Gryphons to a pair of medals, claiming silver at the provincial level followed by a bronze medal at the CIS Championships in Victoria. Since being named head coach of the Gryphons Field Hockey program back in 2004, Turley has guided the Gryphons to a total of four OUA titles (2007, 2009, 2010 & 2013) with her highest finish at the CIS Championships coming in 2007 when the Gryphons took home silver. Over the course of her tenure, Turley has laid claim to a total of 17 medals at the OUA and CIS levels combined.

Note: Nikki Woodcroft from Waterloo, Ontario, was also a member of this Junior National team. She was a standout player in the Cobras program (2010-2013) .

Cobras U18 faced St. Andrews University, Scotland (yes the very one Prince William and Kate attended) in two matches tonight. The Cobras dominated the first game 3-0 and it was a tight second match, but an older St. Andrews squad prevailed in the second match winning 3-1. It was a good opportunity for the Cobras to use the skills they have been working on, as well as, play some good hockey.
